**UPDATE** THE JET UNITED STATES APPLICATION IS NOW CLOSED! GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE!

Here you will be able to find some basic information on the JET program. Also check out some links to some of my favorite
JET V-loggers on YouTube! Also I learned a lot about JET from just searching the internet, and from other JET’s, so don’t just go by this information alone; research and find some former or current JET’s to get there input.

JET is an exciting program, and for so many it changes their lives completely. The JET program application is no easy feat. You must have nerves of steel! The waiting, the stress of making sure you get everything just so! Okay maybe that is me, but still, when applying you need to know what you are getting into.

First let’s go through the basics! The Requirements. Please note, these are non negotiable. JET is pretty black and white when it comes to the application and the process itself. So if you don’t meet any of these requirements, no go my friend.

Before you apply for the JET Program, you must first make sure you meet the following eligibility requirements.
You must:
be a US citizen (by application deadline. See country list below to non-US citizens);
earn your Bachelors degree by July 1, 2010;
in principle, be less than 40 years of age as of April 1, 2010;
not have lived in Japan for 6 or more years (since 2000); *NEW for 2010*
not have been a former JET participant in the last 3 years; *NEW for 2010*
have excellent English skills (both spoken and written);
have a genuine interest in Japan.

ALT applicants do not need TEFL/TESL certification or other education credentials, but these are beneficial. If you have anymore questions please contact your local embassy/consulate for further information.
CIR applicants must have a strong command (semi-advanced to advanced level) of the Japanese language.

Now after you have got the requirements down you need to apply right? Of course you do! So now the fun part of getting your list of goodies together to send off to their respected homes.
There is quite a good list of things you need to send off. Visit your embassy/consulate site for a checklist and application!

NOW, the wait......

JET Timeline as follows (for U.S.)

INITIAL SCREENING: December /January
Applications will be screened at the Embassy during December 2009 and January 2010. We will not accept late application materials and will only consider those complete applications which arrive on time. Upon processing, the JET Program will send confirmation cards to all applicants. The confirmation card confirms receipt of your application in the mail and serves as a reminder of your ID number.
IMPORTANT: All applicants will receive ID numbers (upon creating accounts on our online application or upon receipt of your application by the JET Program). By early February, applicants will be able to check their status online using their ID numbers on this website. Do not call the Embassy or Consulates to check the status of your application.
INTERVIEWS: February
Applicants who passed the initial screening will be interviewed at the Embassy or one of the 16 Japanese consulates located in the U.S. and Guam, as indicated on the application form. Interview dates and other details will be sent to interviewees by the Embassy or Consulate that they chose for their interview location. Interviews are generally held in mid-February (although this is subject to change).  All transportation costs and other expenses to and from the interview site are to be borne by the applicant.
Note about interviews: If you make it to the interview stage of the application process, you must have your interview in the US in February 2010. (Choose your interview location with this in mind.) Telephone interviews or interviews in other countries are not possible for US applicants.
RESULTS ANNOUNCED: Early April
Final interview results will be announced to successful, unsuccessful, and alternate (see explanation below) candidates in early April 2010. Alternate candidates will be upgraded when needed, until the end of December 2010.
PLACEMENT NOTIFICATION: May-June
Once a short-list candidate accepts a position and sends in the Reply Form, CLAIR, along with related organizations, will assign the candidate to a contracting organization. After a contracting organization is selected, short-list candidates will be notified of their placement assignments. An unofficial Notice of Appointment, Terms and Conditions of Employment, and other materials, will be sent from the contracting organization to the participant. However, if it becomes clear that there is some factor restricting a short-list candidate’s ability to fulfill the duties of the job or if a contracting organization cannot be found for an applicant, placement may not be possible. If it is determined that the factors which hindered the candidate’s ability to perform the duties of the job no longer exist the following year, the candidate will not be required to complete an application form if he or she still wishes to re-apply to the JET Program.
So there you have it my friends. That is the basics in a nutshell. As you can see it is a lot of waiting. If you are accepted though, it’s such a great feeling because you waited so long! Again, for specifics please visit the links below to your respective country.
